Frequently asked questions
No. It matches the letter pattern you give it, not the clue. Work out how many letters the answer has and which of them the crossing words give you, type those with ? for the unknown ones, and the tool lists the words that fit. It never reads the clue and shows no definitions.
Type each known letter and use ? or _ for one unknown letter, so c?t fits cat, cot and cut. Use * for any run of letters, [bc] for one of the letters in brackets, and digits for repeated letters: 1221 fits words such as noon and deed. End the pattern with -xyz to exclude letters or +xyz to require them. A pattern can have up to 20 symbols and two *. Spaces and capitals are ignored.
Letter boxes give you one box per letter: type the letters you know, leave the other boxes empty, and add letters the word must or must not contain. They are the default for Arabic. For German you can switch on crossword spelling, which reads ä, ö, ü and ß as AE, OE, UE and SS, the way German crosswords fill their boxes.
The words come from open word lists, not from the dictionary of any particular crossword or game, so a few valid words can be missing and a few rare ones can appear. Common words come first, then the rest in alphabetical order, up to 1,000 results. Your letters stay in your browser: the tool downloads word-list files from this site, and those downloads show only the language and the word lengths requested. The credits page names every source.
