Frequently asked questions
Not always. The Word Checker uses open word lists, not the list of any particular game, so a word can be accepted by a game and missing here, or the other way round. Read a result as “this word is in the open word list”, not as a ruling for a competition. The credits page names every source and its license.
Valid word means the word is in the main list. Extended list only means it is not in the main list but is in a broader accept-only list, which exists for French, Italian and Portuguese. Not in the list means the word is well formed but in neither list. Cannot be checked means the entry has a space, a character that is not a letter of the chosen language, letters from two alphabets, or fewer than 2 or more than 15 letters.
Case is ignored and each language’s folding rules apply before the lookup. Größe is checked as GRÖSSE in German, cœur as COEUR in French, and ёлка as ЕЛКА in Russian. The checked form is shown next to every word that normalization changed, so you can see exactly what was looked up.
It shows no definitions or meanings; it only says whether a word is in the list. For Russian the list holds headword forms only, so plurals and cases show as not in the list. Your words stay in your browser: the tool downloads open word-list files from this site, and those downloads show only the language and the word lengths requested.
