Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a common silent-reading average for adults; speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, a typical presentation pace. Both round up to the next whole minute, so any non-empty text shows at least one minute.
A word is any run of non-whitespace characters, so "don't" and "e.g." each count once. A sentence is counted by its terminal punctuation — a group of one or more of . ! ? … — so text with no such punctuation shows zero sentences.
