Frequently asked questions
ROI (return on investment) is your net gain divided by what you put in: ROI = (final value − cost) ÷ cost × 100. If you invest $10,000 and it grows to $13,500, your net return is $3,500 and your ROI is 35%.
Annualized ROI (a compound annual growth rate) spreads the total return evenly across the holding period: ((final value ÷ cost)^(1 ÷ years) − 1) × 100. A 35% total return over 3 years is only about 10.5% per year. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time.
Yes. If the final value is less than what you invested, the net return and ROI are negative — that is a loss. A total loss (final value of $0) shows as −100% ROI.
