Frequently asked questions
Dividend yield is the annual dividend per share divided by the current share price, shown as a percentage. For example, a stock paying $3 a year at a $100 price has a 3% yield. This tool annualizes the dividend you enter by the number of payouts per year, then divides by the price.
Yield on cost measures the annual dividend against what you originally paid per share, rather than today's price. If you bought at $80 and now receive $3 a year, your yield on cost is 3.75% even if the current-price yield is lower. It shows how your income compares to your purchase price.
Enter the dividend for a single payment and set payouts per year to match: 4 for quarterly, 12 for monthly, 2 for semi-annual, or 1 for annual. The calculator multiplies them to get the full-year dividend before working out the yield and income.
Not necessarily. A very high yield can mean the share price has fallen because the market expects trouble, and dividends can be cut or suspended at any time. Yield is one input among many and these figures are estimates, not investment advice.
