Frequently asked questions
It is the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet — Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, and so on — adopted by ICAO and NATO so that letters can be read aloud without being confused over a noisy phone or radio. This tool maps each letter you type to its code word.
Type any word, name, or code into the box and the NATO spelling appears instantly. Letters become code words (S O S becomes Sierra Oscar Sierra), digits are read as figures (Nine One One), and spaces are marked so you can read the whole string back unambiguously.
Those are the official spellings. ICAO spells Alfa with an f and Juliett with two t's so that speakers of any language pronounce them correctly — a French or Spanish reader might otherwise drop the silent letters.
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser; what you type is only used to build the phonetic spelling shown on this page and is never sent to a server.
