Frequently asked questions
Type each word you guessed, then tap its tiles to say how the game scored them: right spot, wrong spot or not in the word. The tool keeps every word that earns exactly those scores for all your guesses, so a letter that appears twice is handled exactly: a second copy marked not in the word means the answer holds only as many copies as the other tiles showed. Words can be 4 to 8 letters long (5 by default), and you can add up to 12 guesses per board.
Choose 1, 2, 4 or 8 boards. All boards share the same guesses, which you type once, and each board has its own tile scores. Every board lists its remaining words, and the suggestions look for a guess that helps all open boards at once. A board you have solved stops taking guesses, so later guesses are ignored on it. On a phone the boards are shown one at a time, with a tab for each.
At once, guesses are ranked by how often their letters, and their letters in each position, occur among the words that still fit. A deeper ranking then runs in the background (in a Web Worker when your browser has one) and replaces it: it scores each guess by the bits of information it is expected to give, which means how evenly it splits the remaining words. Suggestions are chosen from a pool of at most 500 words: when no more than 500 words could still be the answer, all of them are in the pool and the rest of it is filled with the most common other words; when more could be, the pool is just the 500 most common words, so a rare possible answer can be missing from the suggestions. The deeper ranking looks at up to 2,000 candidates per board. Hard mode keeps the suggestions legal under the usual hard-mode rule.
By default it looks for the answer among the common words of an open word list in your interface language (English on Chinese, Japanese and Hindi pages). Choose all words if the answer might be a rare word. These lists are not any game's own list, so a game can accept a word that is missing here, or the other way round; when no word fits, the board says so. Offensive words are always left out. Your guesses stay on your device; so that you can bookmark a game they are kept in the page address after the # sign, and anyone you send that link to will see them.
