Frequently asked questions
Type one letter in each tile of the 4×4 or 5×5 grid. The tool lists every word in the chosen word list that can be spelled by moving from a tile to a touching tile, in any of the 8 directions including diagonals, using each tile at most once per word. Results are grouped by length, longest first, with exact counts. By default only words of 3 or more letters are listed; you can choose a shortest length from 2 to 15. At most 1,000 words are listed at a time, and buttons list more.
Select a word in the results, with a click, a tap, or Enter or Space on the keyboard. Its tiles are numbered in order on the grid, and its path is also listed above the word list as tile coordinates, for example "Row 2, column 3", so you can follow it without seeing the grid. Select the same word again to clear it.
Some grids put the two letters Q and U together on one tile. Turn on "Use a Qu tile" and a Q you type becomes one tile that spells "qu" and counts as two letters in the word length. The option is available for the word lists that use the Latin alphabet.
It searches open word lists for English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic, chosen from the language menu, and the lists hold words of up to 15 letters. They are not the official dictionary of any game, so a word may be found here and refused by a game, or the other way round. The Russian list holds headword forms only. Your grid is searched in your browser; the page only downloads word-list files, which show the language and word lengths but never your letters. The grid is kept after the # in the page address so you can bookmark it. Offensive words are hidden unless you turn them on.
